Homeschoolers' setback sends shock waves through state
A California appeals court ruling clamping down on homeschooling by parents without teaching credentials sent shock waves across the state this week, leaving an estimated 166,000 children as possible truants and their parents at risk of prosecution.
The homeschooling movement never saw the case coming.

I must admit, the thought of homeschooling Bella has crossed my mind due to her allergy, but her schools so far have been accomodating. Not sure I'm disciplined enough though. Plus, living in the Bay Area makes it difficult to live solely on one salary.How about you guys? Do any of you homeschool your kids? Is it due to their allergies or just because you feel you can give them a better education?

I don't think homeschooling is for me. I don't think I'm disciplined enough and I'm not sure I'm the best "teacher" for my child. He doesn't listen to me as it is. But having said that, because of his multiple food allergies, it may be a neccessity for us. I'm hoping the school can keep him safe, but if they can't then I'll be homeschooling (and we will look into EVERY school in the area before I would homeschool). This ruling really shocked me. I just hope it doesn't take the homeschooling option away from families who need it or who really feel it's the best option for their children.
I just wanted to say that we homeschool our food allergic children. I started homeschooling because the local school at the time couldn't accomdate our childs needs. After homeschooling for 3 years now - even if all of his allergies went away today - I would continue to homeschool. I find it to be the most rewarding thing I can do. I absolutely love it and so do my kids. My kids can work ahead of grade level when they are ready and when things are a little more difficult for them we can spend more time on that.
We are in a Charter Homeschool and it pays for extra-curricular activities like Piano, Karate, Art and more. It is like he is getting a private school customized education and the state pays for it.
