Progress, We Have Progress!

Big news in the PFMama household!

B had an allergist appointment this morning: she had a skin prick test (which my crazy daughter thinks is worse than a blood draw - go figure).

We were hoping for a smaller reaction than last year...and we got it!

She still reacted, but it was reduced enough for us to talk about food challenges (yes, even with a positive result - with a negative RAST, our allergist was ok to move forward now since her wheal size has reduced significantly over the years).

The doctor gave us the option to do it right away, but after weighing the pros and cons with him, we decided to wait until the fall to give her body a little while longer to gear up and (hopefully) grow out of the allergy.

So we're so excited! We're still avoiding just as diligently as we have been, but to see a possible end on the horizon is great.

I hope your Monday was just as good.

Wow, that is so great. Now I have to ask, were you the one that told me her numbers went up at first? If so that really gives me hope....

I can not wait to see how this all unfolds.

Wow. That is huge news! Maybe I should have a more positive attitude about this summer's skin test appointment. All I can think of is the negative, the awful, larger than life, wheal, but this gives me hope. That's really, really great news. A smaller wheal and talking about food challenge--wow!

Yeah! Great news.

I wonder if allergists are getting more comfortable doing food challenges even with positive skin or blood results. With so much in the media lately about food challenges being the only "true and accurate test", maybe we'll see more challenges.

I took my son into the allergist last week and she suggested we schedule an egg challenge, even though skin and blood test are positive for egg. He hasn't had a food challenge in over 5 years because his "numbers were too high". We're keeping our fingers crossed. An interesting issue has arisen, though. As an almost 9 year old, my son is very nervous about eating egg in a food challenge. He even commented that the doctor was going to "kill him". Scary stuff for a kid!

Congrats to B! I'm hoping for a similar result for my little one in a few years!

And ooh...for me, the skin prick test IS WAY worse than a blood test! I swell up for hours and burn and itch like crazy! I'd give a dozen vials of blood rather than have a skin prick test if given the chance!

This is great news! Oh how I long for a day like that. By the way, my son thinks the skin prick is worse than shots. Of course, his reaction to the skin test lasted for quite a while. He was screaming in pain. It was such a sad sight. Anyway, it is great to hear some good news!
