Eating Peanuts While Pregnant = Peanut Allergy?

I hesitated in posting this, but it's a study by a reputable researcher.

Peanuts During Pregnancy May Lead to Later Allergy

Heavy emphasis on the MAY.

I know folks who avoided completely with their second pregnancies and still had a PA child.

The research goes back and forth and frankly I'm not sure what to believe.  All I know is that I can't beat myself up over something I may or may not have done 'right' during my pregnancy.

And you shouldn't either.

When my daughter was first diagnosed with a peanut allergy, people would suggest that maybe I ate too many peanuts while others would say I didn't eat enough/expose the fetus to enough peanuts.

Either way, it is another reason for guilt among Mom's. Like we don't carry enough, right? :)

My brother has an extreme peanut allergy. As a result, I avoided peanuts through my whole pregnancy and most of the time I was nursing. Allergy-prevention was one of the main reasons I wanted to nurse for a decent length of time (stopped at about 15 1/2 months). Now it looks like my son has a peanut allergy anyway. (I say "looks like" b/c we were very lucky in that the first reaction was so mild, and the RAST test results were also very low (but still positive) - for now we're assuming he is allergic, but hoping further testing when he's older might show he's not or that he's grown out of it).

Of course, I worry that they're wrong and that not eating them was bad. Or that the peanut butter I started eating at the end of my nursing period was bad. Or that I should have nursed for longer. Anyway, like you said, you can't beat yourself up about it. I did the best I could. And you never know, his allergies could have been worse if I hadn't done what I did do.

I ate peanut butter almost every day in my pregnancy with my daughter. No allergy.

I couldn't eat peanut butter with my son (made me sick) and he has the peanut allergy.

Who knows the answer?

I did eat peanut butter during pregnancy. My peanut allergy son is a twin. His fraternal twin brother is not allergic.

The Asthma & Allergy Research Centre in the UK had a similar study and found that eating peanuts while pregnant lead to peanut allergy. That study was 15 years ago. Despite peanut avoidance while pregnant or in young infants, the number of child peanut allergy still continued to rise. Peanut avoidance proved counterproductive.

In 2009 Australia also urged parents and mom's to be to avoid peanuts. Again the recommendations from the study proved counterproductive.

My mom also didn't eat peanuts while pregnant with 3 of us. I was the only one in the family who had anaphylaxis to peanut, shellfish, penicillin, and bees. My brother and sister were both fine.

Dr Oz from Oprah recently said that the cause of peanut allergy was probably due to peanut oil in manys food today. I had peanut allergy since the 70's and know that the way food was manufactured then in comparison to today.

I speak as the first to overcome peanut allergy anaphylaxis after a struggle for 35 years. I know from my own experience that the cause of peanut allergy is from multiple factors in the internal/external environment in the western world. Whether you eat peanuts or not during pregnancy has little or nothing to do with it. We can see this with so many conflicting studies from our experts.

Again researchers failed to research if there were any similar studies before releasing their findings. If they did, they would have learnt that peanut avoidance didn't change anything 15 years ago.

They could have spared some of the blame and guilt parents felt the last few days. Parents have to go through enough already without adding unnecessary stress. I know experts are under pressure to deliver answers but they nead to learn to look in the right places.

I have just started to speak out so welcome your patients. I will keep you posted.
